If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. A cliché expression used by some to say there are things in life better left alone. For nearly 25 years, that phrase could accurately be applied to above ground urea and UAN nitrogen protection.

NBPT has been the leading urease-inhibitor active ingredient for above-ground nitrogen stabilization since its creation. And while the efficacy of NBPT cannot be disputed, the researchers and developers at Koch Agronomic Services (KAS) are proving that even if it ain’t broke, you can still make improvements.

Introducing DUROMIDE™

Developed by KAS, DUROMIDE™ is an active ingredient designed to work alongside NBPT, complementing the benefits already found in the established stabilizer. The result is a new way to protect your nitrogen investment for longer than previously possible.

How Does It Extend Protection?

Ammonia volatilization can rob your plants of the nutrients they need to produce the yields you’re looking for. When urea or UAN are applied to a field, multiple factors such as soil moisture, warm temperatures, wind, soil acidity and high crop residues can contribute to nitrogen loss.

NBPT is a fast-acting molecule that gets to work right away, blocking the hydrolysis of urea as soon as it’s applied and protecting your investment from the elements. Unfortunately, NBPT can degrade over time, leaving nitrogen susceptible to loss. This is where DUROMIDE comes in. DUROMIDE has been designed as a more robust molecule, so when NBPT breaks down, DUROMIDE picks up and keeps that protection going. This gives fertilizer even more time to be incorporated while optimizing your yield potential in the process.

Beyond the extended window of protection this dynamic duo provides, you can also benefit from the consistency and improved efficiencies that come along with its high active-ingredient concentration — advantages you can only find in ANVOL™ nitrogen stabilizer.

Record-setting rain during the 2018 fall limited or prevented fertilizer applications in many regions of the U.S. Add to that an abundance of late winter precipitation, below average temperatures and large snow melt have led to record-setting floods in parts of the Midwest and saturated fields in other parts of the U.S., making it difficult for growers to hit the ground running this spring.

Urea-Ammonium Nitrate, also known as UAN, is an excellent source of nitrogen for crops. However, farmers may dismiss the risk of nitrogen loss from UAN, incorrectly assuming that liquid forms of nitrogen are not subject to appreciable volatilization losses.
