Maximizing Crop Potential: The Value of Micronutrients
Micronutrients may account for only a fraction of a crop’s total nutrient needs, but their importance in plant growth and yield potential is invaluable. Micronutrients support germination, root development, leaf growth and reproductive processes. Without them, even the best-managed fields may fail to reach their potential.
Does a micronutrient deficiency matter?
Micronutrients such as boron (B), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu) play pivotal roles in the plant life cycle. These elements help plants withstand environmental stressors and optimize photosynthesis, leading to healthier plants and higher yields.
Despite their critical role, micronutrients are often overlooked compared to macronutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). This oversight can have significant consequences, as even a marginal deficiency can limit a crop’s yield potential. Addressing micronutrients' short-term and long-term availability is essential for optimal crop health and yield.
“Growers will always prioritize adding N-P-K to their crop – that’s a given,” said Bryce Geisel, senior agronomist and representative of Koch Agronomic Services (KAS). “But ignoring micronutrients can lead to cumulative depletion over time. Without replenishing what’s removed with harvest, you risk expensive adjustments later and significant yield impacts.
Challenges of micronutrient management
Managing micronutrients effectively is no small task, particularly in Canada’s challenging early growing season. Cold and wet soils can hinder root growth and limit plants’ ability to access nutrients. This is especially problematic for nutrients like copper and zinc, which bind to soil particles and are less available for plant uptake under these conditions.
Additionally, traditional granular micronutrient products often struggle with uneven distribution, leading to “hot spots” where some plants may experience toxicity while others face deficiencies. This inconsistency can hinder overall crop performance and negatively impact yield. Improved nutrient distribution can help mitigate these risks.
“Our early season soils are not ideal for accessing micronutrients,” said Geisel. “You might think you’re setting yourself up for success by simply applying a lot of nutrients, but if those nutrients aren’t evenly distributed and near the root zone for uptake, the seedling may not get the best start for optimal growth.”
Meeting a growing crop’s needs: WOLF TRAX™ DDP™
Developed to address the challenges many growers face, WOLF TRAX™ Dry Dispersible Powder (DDP™) micronutrients offer a game-changing solution for growers. Leveraging patented EvenCoat™ Technology, WOLF TRAX DDP provides many advantages, including:
- Even distribution: EvenCoat technology ensures DDP nutrients uniformly coat the entire surface of dry fertilizer granules, resulting in consistent application.
- Dual-formulation design: A sulfate form provides immediate availability to support early crop development, while the oxide form releases nutrients gradually, promoting availability during critical growth stages later in the season.
- Maximizing nutrient availability and uptake: Closer proximity to growing roots benefits crops throughout the growth cycle, boosting crop performance.
- Custom flexibility: Formulation versatility allows tailored nutrient blends to address specific soil needs and reduce deficiencies.
- Improved operational efficiency: The unique technology in WOLF TRAX optimizes storage, transport and handling. It adheres well to fertilizer granules, minimizing dust and streamlining application.
“We know the advantages of WOLF TRAX DDP from an agronomic standpoint, but it also has many operational benefits, including ease of application, compatibility with various fertilizer blends, and flexibility for both retail and on-farm treatment, making it a practical choice for growers,” said Earl Greenhough, manager of product service, KAS.
