Does a micronutrient deficiency matter?

Without replenishing what’s removed with harvest, you risk expensive adjustments later and significant yield impacts.

Challenges of micronutrient management 

Managing micronutrients effectively is no small task, particularly in Canada’s challenging early growing season. Cold and wet soils can hinder root growth and limit plants’ ability to access nutrients. This is especially problematic for nutrients like copper and zinc, which bind to soil particles and are less available for plant uptake under these conditions.

Additionally, traditional granular micronutrient products often struggle with uneven distribution, leading to “hot spots” where some plants may experience toxicity while others face deficiencies. This inconsistency can hinder overall crop performance and negatively impact yield. Improved nutrient distribution can help mitigate these risks. 

“Our early season soils are not ideal for accessing micronutrients,” said Geisel. “You might think you’re setting yourself up for success by simply applying a lot of nutrients, but if those nutrients aren’t evenly distributed and near the root zone for uptake, the seedling may not get the best start for optimal growth.”
