Pre-flood nitrogen fertilizer application can set the stage for a rice crop yield potential and ultimately a grower’s profit. But without the right protection, a grower could be forfeiting the potential benefits of a pre-flood nitrogen application.

Applying urea on wet soils can result in an increased loss of nitrogen due to ammonia volatilization. In a study conducted by the University of Arkansas, wet soils lost more than twice as much nitrogen to volatilization after applying urea.
